Drafting of noise & vibration specifications
VL DYNAMICS noise and vibration services builds on many years of experience providing independent consultancy to the marine industry. This includes providing noise and vibration consultancy on several luxury yachts. The yachts include more than five +100m yachts.
Understanding a new project, the client's expectations to noise and vibration comfort and hence drafting a thourough building specifaction is crucial to the success of a new project. A thorough specification with detailed noise and vibration requirements increases the chance of a succesfull project and may prevent costly issues at later stages of the project.
VL DYNAMICS assists reviewing, drafting and negotiating building specifications, reviewing and commenting on drawings such as steel structures, machinery foundations, floor coverings, insulation, accommodation build-up etc.
Noise control and advanced acoustics
The combination of many years of experience with noise and vibration analysis, staying innovative by developing own tools for noise and vibration analysis and utilizing commercially available software tools goes hand in hand at VL DYNAMICS.
Using numerical analysis tools VL DYNAMICS can predict noise levels in all spaces of a ship. The analysis can be performed at a very early stage of the project and used as the basis for negotiating the contractual noise values/limits in the building specifaction. As the project progresses the noise analysis is used for selecting the optimal noise mitigating measures and optimizing the rooms acoustics in important accommodation spaces. The noise analysis is continuesly updated based on the project progress.

On site-inspections ensures that agreed noise and vibration mitigating measures are installed as agreed and installed correctly. Mitigating measures typically include floating floors, visco-elastic constraining layers, machinery vibration isolators etc. Noise and vibration mitigating measures that are incorrectly installed are costly to change at later stages of the projects.
Vibration analysis
A structural resonance can cause discomfort to crew and passengers, and in worst case, lead to structural failure, failure to equipment and endanger human life.
Using Finite Element Analysis natural frequencies of a given structure can be determined.
A forced response calculation determines the behavior of a structure or shaft system to an excitation force and provide an outset for providing design recommendations.
An undamoed eigenvalue calculation is used to determine the natural frequency of stiffeners, plate panels and local deck structures. Where excitation sources and calculated eigenvalues coincide, modifications necessary are determined.
Contributions from propeller pressure pulses, frequency dependent structural damping and frequency dependent added mass are considered using recignized methods available in the literature and extensive in-house experience.
Where nescessary numerical calculation models are calibrated with measurements. This is typically done for design modifications of exsisting structures where requirements to operation and loading have changed.
Fatigue & crack propagation

Droppped container impact on the deck structure seen from below.We can estimate the state of an entire structure in operation using a smaller number of measurement sensors linking measured velocities to a finite element (FE) model of the structure.
From this structural state FE model, a complete assessment of the structure at any location can be computed.

Noise and vibration measurements
During the construction phase of a project, factory acceptance tests, commissioning and sea-trials noise and vibration measurements are often necessary. The noise and vibration measurements are used to validate constructions, levels and for potential trouble-shooting issues when the ship is already built. Measurements are performed according to the relevant ISO-standards, IMO regulations, class comfort rules and local legislation. The employees of VL DYNAMICS all have a background from a major classification society and are therefore well acquainted classification rules and notifications.
To ensure the most reliable measurement results VL DYNAMICS only uses world-leading noise and vibration measurement equipment from e.g. Brüel & Kjær and National Instruments.

Condition based maintenance monitoring
VL DYNAMICS is introducing VLD-Monitor©, a simple and easy-to-use machinery condition monitoring system that is based on several decades of theory and practical knowledge.
The VLD-Monitor is a stand-alone integrated software-hardware product that allows clients with a minimal of effort to monitor one or several machineries with regards to wear and operation load and compare results with recognized industry standards, Rules and Regulations.
VLD-Monitor uses standard National Instrument © hardware solutions with build on software developed by VL DYNAMICS.
VLD-Monitor is designed to handle anything from acceleration, velocity and displacement signals to strain, temperature or process signals.
Requirements to Intrinsic Safety are addressed on the project level to ensure safe and appropriate installation. VL DYNAMICS cooperates with installation professionals with extensive experience with electrical installations for marine and offshore applications.
The VLD-Monitor is tailored to the client equipment requirements and provides the client with a real-time trend plot functionality.
The VLD-Monitor Trend Plot is an interactively graphical representation of all (or a selection) of the recorded data that allows the operator to easily investigate one or more signals.
By simply “clicking” the curve of interest, the operator is provided with a graphical window with a pre-defined time scale of a selected signal.
While data logging is running the operator can investigate a selection of signals using the signal processing tools made available in VLD-Monitor.
Signal processing tools available in VLD-Monitor include:
- Trend plot, one or more signals

VLD-Monitor has a simple data configuration setup allowing the operator full control of data processing and visualization of data.
VLD-Monitor is an online recording and processing system that is logging a selection of signals (infinite) simultaneously.
The logged data is stored in a binary file format and the data file is constantly updated until either the logging process is terminated manually or through a setting in the setup file. A separate backup file is created in parallel.
Graphical representation of logged data is automatically prepared and made available to stakeholders of choice, whether local or distant presence.
VLD-Monitor is a stand-alone system that will automatically re-boot if power is lost and regained again. The data setting and logging process will initiate without any external interference. However, the system is made available and can be displayed and operated using the Microsoft Remote Desktop application software or similar.
INSTALLATION
All systems will initially be configured by VL DYNAMICS. The system configuration will be based on type of equipment, type of system, recognized industry standards and explicit client requirements.
VLD-Monitor data input is either online data (sensors permanently installed on equipment), offline data (data measured manually using provided handheld data acquisition tool) or both. All data, whether online or offline is processed in the one and same database allowing a flexible and "one-system" approach to equipment monitoring and maintenance.
SUMMARY
